What is the 11+ Exam?
The 11+ Exam is taken by Year 5 or Year 6 students and assesses their academic ability to determine suitability for grammar schools or selective independent schools. The exam usually covers:
Maths: Problem-solving, arithmetic, algebra, and reasoning skills.
English: Reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Creative Writing: Structured and engaging written tasks to assess creativity and literacy.
Verbal Reasoning: Logical thinking, vocabulary, and language-based problem-solving.
Non-Verbal Reasoning: Spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and abstract reasoning.
Each school or examination board may set slightly different tests, and I ensure my tutoring sessions are tailored to the specific requirements of your chosen schools.
Examination Boards I am currently preparing students for include:
GL, CEM, ISEB, Future Stories Community Enterprise Entrance Test, INCAS, QUEST, and some Independent School’s own entrance exams.
Working with parents to look at when the 11+ exams of their chosen schools are, I map out the content coverage to ensure all of the content has been taught in advance of the exams.
I encourage parents to research when mock exams are being offered by local test centres so that the student can practise taking the mock papers in exam conditions. The marks, feedback and analysis of these tests is then used to inform my planning of future sessions, ensuring that your child feels confident in all of the areas required.
